First, our wood-planked cabin walls (the planks were cut and milled from poplar trees on the property, we're pretty certain: They're all sorts of thicknesses and widths -- none of which you'll find at the Home Depot -- and far from square).

And now? Clean, bright and shabby chic. The whitewash helps the cabin feel a bit bigger. Sorry, wood purists, but I promise, you can still see the wood's grain and knots and such:

And second, the driveway. For the past few weeks, when we drove to town, we hauled our trailer with us and got a couple of tractor scoops full of crushed rock from Floyd's, the local hardware store. And lemme tell ya, raking out seven trailer-loads of crushed rock is a Flat Top kind of workout. (Not to mention the 30 push-ups we have to do for each homebrew.)

Next up on the blog: The cabin "skirt," and tales of Mason's oh-so-close tunnel rat days in Vietnam. (Had he ever gone, of course.)
Your "after" photos look really great and I am not a wood purist. I like your solution of white washing the walls to meke the space look bigger and it does. The driveway looks terrific and you did one heck of a job. You take DIY to new heights.
ReplyDeleteStunning. You are so making flat top into a yuppie haven. Can I still use the word yuppie? We need to chat cause we are FINALLY painting ouraster bedroom, and we want to paint the cheap ass pine panel ceiling. Plus we are in need of crown molding advice. Ok, more later, when I'm not typing on a cell phone. Nice work!
